TMJ Treatment
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the area directly in front of the ear on either side of the head where the upper and lower jaw meet. Temporomandibular joint disorder occurs when the joint that attaches the upper jaw and lower jaw is not working properly.
TMJ disorders are a group of complex problems with many possible causes. People with TMJ may have a clicking sound when opening or closing their mouth impeding the correct functionality. This syndrome can cause headaches, ear pain or discomfort, dizziness, tooth sensibility, neck, shoulder and mandibular muscle pain, among others. Temporomandibular disorder affects the muscles that control chewing and the articulation of the jaw, fortunately there are many treatment options for TMJ disorders; such as surgery, occlusal and other therapies, medications, jaw rest and many more.
A custom-made clear, hard plastic appliance that fits over the upper or lower teeth will be designed from models of your teeth. Worn at night, your appliance prevents the top and bottom molars from making contact and alleviates the pressure that grinding causes on the teeth and jaws. With proper treatment, your symptoms can be relieved, preventing neck, facial and headache pain while protecting and preserving your natural teeth.
